Change your words, change your life.

I am a personal and professional development junkie. I read books on a continual basis, both hard-covered books, as well as audiobooks. I also take online courses. I invest in myself immensely. I do a lot of live courses. I am constantly practicing what I preach.

Brian Tracy delivered a quote years ago that has always landed in me very solidly when it comes to the power of words for our success. What he said was, “Your ability to communicate with others will account for a full 85% of success in your business and in your life.”

Words are powerful.

Words can empower, just as easily as they can disempower. Words can inspire, and they can destroy. Words can shape your or someone else’s esteem. They can hurt you or hurt someone else. They can devastate you or them. They can make you or break you.

Words can accelerate your ability to achieve success just as easily and quickly as words can devastate your ability to accomplish success.

When I say words, I’m not only talking about the ones you speak out loud. I am also referring to the words we think, the words that we speak internally to ourselves.

Take a Look Back

Take a second to reflect on your childhood. How were you spoken to? How were you spoken with? Were you lifted up and encouraged? Or, were you criticized? Were you told you could do things? Or, were you told you couldn’t do things?

How did those words shape your relationship with yourself and with others? Back in your childhood, these words imprinted on you and created the beliefs and relationships about how we talk with other people and ourselves.

Do you look at a glass and see it as half empty or half full? Do you see your own greatness or weaknesses?

Reprogram How You Think

Now, I am not talking about faking it until you make it. What I am talking about is reframing your vocabulary and how you communicate.

Here’s an example of a reframe:

I have to work. Vs. I get to work.

Here are some more… I have to network. I have to email. I have to make calls today.

You don’t have to. You get to! It is a privilege to be able to build a business. It is a privilege to be of service to people. It is a privilege to be invited into other people’s lives.

That simple reframe makes what it is your doing something that you want to do instead of something that you have to do.

You don’t have to pursue your dreams. That is something that you get to do! When you get to shift how you look at things, it will shift how you feel about it, then it will shift how you show up about it.

Our words have power. Deepak Chopra said, “Our unconscious mind is constantly eavesdropping on our internal dialogue.”

If you say, “I can’t afford that.” You are creating that destiny for yourself. Why can’t you afford it but others in your position can? A lot of it has to do with how you’re communicating with yourself. If you say you can’t do something long enough, guess what? You’re going to be right!
